The red Aglaonema that holds its colour — even in lower light
Most red-foliage plants demand bright light to maintain their colour. Aglaonema China Red is different. It holds its striking deep red and green patterned leaves in conditions where other plants would fade to plain green — making it one of the most reliable colour plants for Sri Lankan interiors where natural light varies.
What’s in the pack
- One rooted Aglaonema China Red — established in a 10 cm pot, actively growing
- Pot — Nursery Pot, Clear Pot, or Self Watering Clear Pot depending on your selection
Why this plant works in most Sri Lankan homes
- Low to medium light tolerance — performs well away from windows, in corridors, and rooms with indirect or artificial lighting
- Low watering frequency — allow soil to partially dry between waterings; forgiving of irregular schedules
- Air purifying — removes common indoor pollutants as it grows
- Compact and manageable — suitable for tabletops, shelves, and desks without outgrowing its space quickly
Setting up your Aglaonema China Red
- Unbox carefully — remove packaging and inspect the plant. Minor leaf droop after transit is normal and recovers within 24–48 hours.
- Choose your location — medium indirect light maintains the best red colouration. The plant tolerates lower light well but some colour fading may occur. Avoid direct sun, which scorches the leaves.
- Acclimate before watering — wait 3–4 days before first watering. Check the top 3–4 cm of soil and water only when it feels dry.
- Repotting — only repot when roots circle the pot base or emerge from drainage holes. Go up one pot size only (2–3 cm larger). Use a well-draining mix with perlite.
Low to medium indirect light. Tolerates rooms away from windows. Red colouration intensifies slightly in brighter indirect light. Direct sun causes leaf scorch and bleaching.
Allow the top 3–4 cm of soil to dry before watering. Water thoroughly and ensure drainage. In Sri Lanka's humidity, once every 7–14 days is typical. Never leave standing in water.
Adapts well to Sri Lanka's ambient humidity. No misting or humidity tray required. Tolerates air conditioning better than most tropical plants.
18–32°C. Sri Lanka's year-round temperatures are ideal. Protect from cold draughts and sustained air conditioning below 15°C.
Well-draining potting mix with 20–30% perlite. Avoid heavy, water-retentive soils that stay wet for long periods.
Balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength, once monthly during active growth. Avoid fertilising in the coolest, slowest-growth period.
Will the red colour fade in my home?
Aglaonema China Red holds its red colouration better than most red-foliage plants in lower light. Some slight fading occurs in very low light — placing it slightly closer to a window will restore and intensify the colour. Direct sunlight bleaches and damages the leaves.
How often should I water it?
Once every 7–14 days is a reasonable guide in Sri Lanka's typical indoor conditions. The key is to check the soil rather than water on a fixed schedule — press a finger 3–4 cm into the soil and water only when it feels dry. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline.
The leaves are yellowing — is something wrong?
A few lower leaves yellowing is normal as the plant redirects energy to new growth. If multiple leaves yellow rapidly, it usually means overwatering — reduce frequency and check drainage. If soil is dry and yellowing is widespread, the plant may need fertiliser or more light.
Can I keep it in my air-conditioned office?
Yes — Aglaonema is one of the best plants for air-conditioned offices. It tolerates lower humidity and cooler temperatures well. Place it near a window or under adequate artificial lighting and water less frequently in a cool environment.
What is the return policy for live plants?
Agril offers a 3-day arrival guarantee. If your plant arrives damaged due to transit, contact us within 3 days with photos and an unboxing video. Normal transit droop (recovers in 24–48 hours) is not covered. Plants are individually inspected before dispatch.
