Agril (legally: Agril Horticulture Technologies Private Limited) is a Sri Lankan houseplant company founded in 2022. It operates as a certified plant importer, exporter, and producer, and runs a commercial tissue culture laboratory established in 2025. Agril sells indoor houseplants, rare tropical plants, pots, substrates, fertilisers, grow lights, and plant care tools and accessories through its online store at agrilhotech.com.
The name Agril means the finest creations of the sun — a reflection of the company's belief that living with plants is one of the most natural things a person can do for their wellbeing, space, and sense of calm.
Our founder's story
It started with a single plant
on my study table.
I was just a small boy. I remember how that one plant changed the feeling of my whole desk — greener, quieter, somehow more alive.
But I also remember watching it slowly die.
Every time I watered it, water dripped onto my books. The light was never quite right. I didn't know what the plant needed — and no one around me seemed to know either. One by one, my early plants rotted away. And I felt responsible for every single one.
What I didn't know then was that millions of plant lovers share exactly that feeling.
The moment that truly changed everything came in a school science class.
My teacher brought out small glass bottles — each one holding hundreds of tiny pineapple plants, perfect and impossibly alive. I couldn't stop staring. I begged her to let me visit her home tissue culture lab. She said yes. That visit planted something in me that never stopped growing.
After my A/L exams, I enrolled in a tissue culture course and built a small home lab in 2022. I kept studying — biotechnology, horticulture, plant science — until 2025, when I opened a fully equipped commercial tissue culture facility: a place where new plant life begins at the cellular level, long before it ever reaches your home.
That is how Agril was born.

A gap that needed more

The science was only half the story. The other half was a frustration we'd carried since childhood — the gap between loving indoor plants and actually keeping them alive.

In 2025, we opened our commercial Tissue Culture Laboratory — one of very few in Sri Lanka dedicated to ornamental and rare houseplants. This is where we propagate disease-free, genetically true plant varieties that simply cannot be sourced through conventional growing.
Tissue culture is the science of growing new plants from a single cell under sterile, precisely controlled conditions. The result: healthier plants, more consistent quality, and access to rare varieties that would otherwise take years to source.
